About the event
PRESENTED BY THE JAZZ MIX, SOUTHEND
Tony Momrelle, former lead singer of Incognito, is one of the most exciting and significant soul musicians on the modern British stage.
In his 20+ year music career he has performed with some of the greatest artists in the world: Incognito, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Sade, Gary Barlow, Andrea Bocelli, Gwen Stefani, Robert Palmer and many more others. In autumn 2016 he supported the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire on their sold-out UK tour. Momrelle was the lead singer of the famous British acid jazz band Incognito for more than sixteen years before embarking on his solo career. His critically acclaimed debut album Keep Pushing was released in 2015, followed by a deluxe edition 12 months later. Featuring guest appearances from Talib Kweli, Chantae Cann and Tony Remy, the album is an infectious mix of ‘80s-inspired synths, jazzy keys, classical piano and soaring soul vocals.
Channelling Hathaway, Wonder and countless other sounds, styles and ideas through his authentic, thoroughly contemporary interpretation of what British soul music means today, Momrelle has created something very special with ‘Keep Pushing’. The album’s strong support from mainstream and regional radio stations culminated in four BBC Radio 2 playlist singles and sustained airplay across Europe.
Momrelle’s “Keep Pushing Tour” has taken him around the world to sold out concerts and festivals in the UK, Australia, Italy, Germany, Russia, France, Indonesia and many other countries. Back home he has delighted audiences at the EFG London Jazz Festival and Cheltenham Jazz Festival for a number of years running.
His second studio album ‘Best Is Yet To Come’ was released in 2019. From the heart-warming optimism of the title track, to the disco funk of “You Got It” and the smooth soul sound of “We Searched For Heaven,” Momrelle presents a vibrant and diverse range of songs that bring out the best of his talent, so that you feel like “Best Is Yet To Come” has something for everyone. However, there are key elements that run through all titles: the sheer quality of the song writing and the unique, powerful tenor voice that only Tony Momrelle himself can deliver.
